lms and cms report

Introduction

Back then, traditional ways of teaching and learning that are opted by educators and students include blackboards, whiteboards and text books. As all of us are concerned, as time passed by, the Millennials is no longer interested in the concept of chalk and talk. These days, our generations are more intrigued by the existence of information technologies that are without doubt have given a great impact and become part and parcel of our daily lives, particularly in institution of higher education.

What is Learning Management System?

As stated by Rouse (n.d.), a learning management system (LMS) is a software application or Web-based technology employed to organize, apply, and evaluate a specific learning process, and it provides a guide to a way to produce and deliver content, track students’ involvement, and assess their achievement. A LMS may also equip interactive features like threaded discussions, video conferencing, and discussion forums for students so that they can interact virtually.

What is Course Management System?

According to Meerts (2003), Course Management System (CMS) generally acts as a medium where instructors are able to post information on the web without having to be familiar or fully comprehend about HTML or other computer languages. In a much more thorough definition, CMS means providing an instructor with tools and structured system that allows proportionately simple and easy creation of online course contents and the subsequently teaching and management of the course which includes multiple interactions with students whose taking the course. Basically, it contains aspects of administration for instance, class rosters and student grading nevertheless it also contributes directly to important aspects of teaching which includes surveys, journals, exercises, quizzes and tests. Other tools like chat rooms and asynchronous bulletin board type communications are included as well. In addition, it is also used mostly for distance learning purposes, thus, making it as an efficient tool that can be accessed anywhere and anytime.

What are the functions of LMS?

LMS has been a necessary approach to engage students of the digital generation today. LMS provides a platform for learning institutions to administer the performance of their students as a whole. LMS is widely used for administrative and reporting purposes, whereby statistics and figures on logistics matters such of enrollments as students in courses offered are delivered. Besides, according to Viswanath (2007),  it also acts as a digital ‘noticeboard’ where LMS provides reminders on important dates, events or even  class schedules. In addition, according to Lonn & Teasly (2008), LMS also helps one to manage materials related in courses. In general, LMS has more administrative features to it as the reports or feedbacks sent from its users will be used for further maintenance and upgrades in future.

What are the functions of CMS?

As we all know, Wikipedia provides us with a brief explanation about CMS as set of software tools that are used for course interactions in on cloud environment. Some of the functions that we can see are; it acts as a platform where faculty posting of class materials like course syllabi and notes. Besides, students too can post their assignments and have chat tools that enable them to interact with other class participants. Plus, it also promotes a threaded discussion board that allows asynchronous communication to be conducted among students and email messages to be sent by participants either to the entire class or to a subset of the entire class. Last but not least, students’ grades can be viewed on a Gradebook in which the faculty is responsible to record it. In this context, iFolio and SMP Web definitely set the perfect examples of all the functions that have been mentioned above.

Similarities

Learning Management System (LMS) is actually similar in concepts to Course Management System, for it promotes a software system intended for educational use and e-tutoring on the Internet.

Differences

Despite these two terms promote almost identical concepts of information technologies, there are a few distinctive elements that can be seen. In CMS, the system focuses on management and distribution of e-Learning and not to mention instructor led courses. In a simpler way, CMS usually act as the main operation of the LMS. Teaching, learning and teacher-student interaction are what CMS focusses on and it provides specifications of tasks in the frame of the courses provided. On another note, LMS focuses on all aspects of the learning process. Not only it delivers contents but it handles for registering, course administration as well as tracking and reporting. Therefore, it covers more in administrative purposes.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, the CMS and LMS are foreseen to give a massive impact on the aspects of teaching and learning and also student and teacher interaction since these software are created to bring together quite a number of internet tools that allowed them to be accessed via a simple and convenient user interface. It definitely benefits everyone.

computer as a tool, tutor, tutee

Living in the years of technology, we could not help to have gadgets and modern technology to help ease the burdens of having too many work to do and too little time until the deadline. Thus various of technologies are created in order to solve these worrisome problem. Among these famous invention created, computer are considered one of the must-have thing. This is because of the various function it possess to help easing our life.

The various functions that the computer have can be put into use as computer functioned as a tool. People need computer to do their job as it processes the data they need faster and more accurately. The useful capability of computer in processing data, making spreadsheets and slides are among the reasons that the computer is being used as a tool. For example Microsoft Word, Microsoft Presentation and Microsoft Excel..

Computer also functions as a tutor. Why? This is because students can seek guidance from the computer when they are in need. They googled the information they need. they learn the how-to's from the computer. Of course the information on the computer is programmed by the experts but the computer make the information easier to access to.

Other than being a tool and a tutor, computer functions as a tutee. For the computer to be tutee, you must teach or in a better term, you have to program it to do what you wanted to do. Because of its dumbness and inability to understand, you must at first understand what you wanted to teach. On the other hand, you will be able to understand more. Before a computer can be a tutor, it must first become a tutee.
